About this experience

What you will be doing.

approx. 30–60 min

The indigo growing in front of Arimatsu Station has come through weeks of 40°C heat in fine health. The session begins by picking its leaves, and everything after that is done by hand — nothing complicated.

Choose one piece to dye: a silk stole, or something else — leather, wool, silk organza. The silk stole is about 20cm wide and 1m long, narrow enough to wear as a stole or to use as a han-eri (kimono half-collar), with the edges left uncut.

For leather, pick the type you would like to make from our samples; once it is dyed we fit the findings, and it becomes an obidome sash clip (about 3cm), a pair of earrings (about 2–3cm), or a keyring. Wool becomes a felt ball, and silk organza a hair ornament. Felt balls can also be strung together and hung as decoration.

Wear the piece you dyed yourself with your own kimono or yukata — one of a kind, and no one else has it.
