The process

How the session runs.

approx. 90 min / 5 steps
  1. Introduction

A short talk on the history of Arimatsu and on what shibori actually is.

  2. Design

Look at the cloth of your tenugui or handkerchief, settle on a design, and decide where to bind it.

  3. Binding (kukuri)

The binding itself. There are several ways to do it, and the artisan will suggest ones that suit the pattern you want — including simple bindings that children can manage.

  4. Dyeing

The cloth is dyed with the bindings still in place. No waiting around.

  5. Untying

Take the threads off and see the pattern for the first time.

The piece you make is yours to take home the same day.

As well as producing Arimatsu Shibori himself, the artisan spends a good part of every year teaching this workshop at schools and events.
