How the session runs.
approx. 90 min / 4 stepsLay plants onto a cotton tenugui handkerchief.
Roll the cloth around a rod and tie it with string.
Steam it just as it is, for 45 to 50 minutes.
Let it cool, untie the string and open the cloth out. This is the moment the colour and shape of the plants appear on it.
Happa to Hana Some eco print transfers the shape of a plant onto cloth. You dye plants onto a cotton tenugui handkerchief.
You lay the plants onto the cloth, roll it around a rod, tie it with string and steam it just as it is. When the steaming is done you untie the string and open the cloth out — and until that moment you cannot see how it has turned out, which is half the pleasure. Finding the colour a plant was holding all along is a thrill for adults and children alike.
There is a bonus that only a collaboration can offer: while your eco print is steaming, you can try the fresh-leaf indigo dyeing running alongside it with Arimatsu greening. The indigo growing in front of Arimatsu Station has come through weeks of 40°C heat in fine health, and the session begins by picking its leaves — everything after that is done by hand.
